I'm a little late in publishing my post about National School Counseling Week (NSCW), which was Feb 1-5, 2021, but better late than never, right?
NSCW is a time for school counselors to share how the counseling programs in their schools help to support student success. Here's my photo challenge for the week.
The Idaho State Board of Education asked me to provide some comments regarding the impact of school counselors in recognition of NSCW. You can read the Facebook post by clicking on the button below.

Each day last week, there were little tokens of appreciation for the staff at Centennial for their support of our school's counseling program. We have the most amazing and supportive educators working at our school, and I am continually grateful for the way that they show up each and every day for the students at our school! Here are pictures of a couple of the daily surprises for staff:
Lastly, I've been sharing out the goals from the counseling program. One of the goals last year (2019-20) was to address the number of student referrals for behaviors. Our school's data showed that 50% percent of behavior referrals were occurring in the classroom. Behaviors in the classroom can be disruptive to the learning process for all students. Below is information describing the goal, interventions provided by the school counseling program, and the results.
GOAL:
3% Reduction in classroom behavior referrals compared to previous academic year

- Staff training on mindfulness
- 150 counseling lessons offered included a mindfulness activity
RESULTS
- 54% decrease in classroom referrals for major behaviors
- 8% decrease in total classroom referrals for all behaviors
We definitely have some positive things happening at our school. We are continuing to use these successful interventions (with some modifications for Covid precautions). It has been exciting to watch our students learn to use strategies and skills to help with emotional regulation!
We had a lot to celebrate for National School Counseling Week!
